The Consorzio per l’AREA di Ricerca Scientifica e Tecnologica di Trieste (hereinafter Consorzio AREA) is the national research institution that manages AREA Science Park  (hereinafter AREA).

AREA is recognised as the main and more experienced multi-sector science and technology park in Italy and a valid example of a fully operative cluster for regional innovation. AREA extends on 55 hectares surface and has about 80.000 sqm of equipped laboratories, offices and service structures established in two campuses on the hills overhanging Trieste, in the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region that is part of the well known Italian North-East area. Presently, AREA consists of 80 national and international organisations, that include public research institutions, private RTD and innovation centres, knowledge-based companies. The personnel is over 1600 units.

Consorzio AREA operates under the vigilance of the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research and its members are the regional and local administrations, the three regional Universities, the National Research Council, as well as several scientific and economical institutions. Consorzio AREA actively participates in several international projects concerning multidisciplinary research, technology development and transfer, diffusion of innovation that involve European knowledge agents (i.e. science & technology parks, research institutes, education and training organizations, technology transfer and business support structures, technology-based industrial companies,…).
